Mexico CITY – Foreign Affairs Secretary, Patricia Espinosa, notes that the fact that the United States is going to reinforce security on its border with Mexico is not incompatible with an open and respectful dialogue on migration.
At a press conference with the Swedish Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt, Espinosa denied that the announcement from Washington on the reinforcement of its southern border signifies conflict. On the contrary, security is also of the utmost interest to Mexico and having a well-protected border is a very important concern for our country, said Espinosa.
Having a secure border, that prevents arms, illegal money and chemical precursors from entering the country as well as the illegal trafficking of people, will help bilateral relations.
Nevertheless, an open, respectful and clear dialogue on migration must be maintained, so that Mexico does not stop pointing out to the U.S. the importance of the contributions that Mexican migrants make in their country.
Regarding Bildt’s visit, Espinosa said that there is an excellent relationship between Mexico and Sweden.
During the discussions held on Monday, the importance of issues that affect both nations, such as the global economic crisis and climate change, was clear, as well as agreements on multilateralism and UN operations.
In the area of trade, the two countries agreed that both countries needed to make the most of the advantages of the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the European Union, and emphasized the importance of the upcoming Climate Change Summit to be held in Mexico.
