MEXICO CITY – Deputies of the National Action Party (PAN) recently conditioned their support to the reform that proposes to modify Article 40 as long as freedom of religion is respected.
Deputy Alberto Carlos Pérez Cuevas of the PAN declared that his party is in favor of this reform “as long as freedom of religion, speech and conscience is respected.”
The Secretary of the Commission of Constitutional Bills said that PAN deputies voted against the reform that proposes to add the word “secular” to the Constitution’s definition of republic because they believe it does not act in accordance with the citizens’ right to freedom of religion. In spite of that, the commission approved the reform and it will soon be submitted to the Congress for approval.
Deputy Pérez said it is up to government to recognize freedom of religion, as established by the American Human Right Convention.
“The constitution is not the one that should grant this right, it should only recognize it.”
The deputy emphasized that his party will vote in favor of the reform if the modification safeguards the fundamental rights of Mexican citizens.
