MEXICO CITY The capital's PRD and several social organizations have called on citizens to go on general strike over electricity bills under the argument that it is illegal for the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to charge for the service.
At a press conference, the local leader of the PRD Manuel Oropeza Morales and Deputies Alejandro Sanchez Camacho and Agustin Guerrero, as well as representatives of several social and civil organizations announced the formation of the Organizational Committee of the Electricity Bill Strike.
They called on residents of the central zone of the country, who previously paid for their service to the extinct Central Light and Power (LyFC), to not pay bills arriving from the CFE. Guerrero stated that the planned strike is not illegal due to the fact that the termination decree of LyFC never specified what would happen to the users who had an established contract with the company.
He assured all citizens that join the strike that they will have the legal backing of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers.
Moreover, in the case that their electricity service is cut, there already exists an agreement with members of the Mexican Electrical Workers Union (SME) for workers to go to striking houses and reinstall the service. They explained that the strike will be supported by members of the PRD block in the Chamber of Deputies and the Mexico City Legislative Assembly,.
