Senate President and member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) Carlos Navarrete said Wednesday that the Senate will submit its own version of bills to update the current presidential system.
During a press conference in which he made an analysis of the regular sessions of the senate that finished Tuesday, Navarrete stated that senators' proposals would be a response to the proposal by President Calderón that intends to limit the legal authority of the Congress.
He explained that Calderón's reform would affect the Congress but will not have an impact on the presidency, which is why, "I dare say that other initiatives will be submitted with the purpose of reviewing the functioning of the presidential system."
"We should not allow the president to walk around protected by a wall. On the contrary, in case he commits illegal or inconvenient act against the country he should be put to trial or limited in his responsibilities The old presidential system where the president was God and could decide everything on his own has passed into history I believe we should all be compelled to assume our responsibilities senators, deputies, ministers and the president alike."
Navarrete said that the Senate has a considerable interest in approving the reforms that would allow the Congress to ratify the cabinet, the National Development Plan and govern during the absence of the president. Navarrete made clear that the old presidential system will not return.
The Senate also passed several bills, ratified 10 ambassadors and two consuls and appointed 20 officials.
